Over 13% polling was recorded in the first two hours on Monday for the bypoll to Sagardighi assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district, an election official said.
The polling was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported, the official said.
Till 9 am, 13.37 per cent polling was recorded. So far, it is completely peaceful, and no untoward incident has been reported,” said Additional Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Basu. PTI,
Candidates from the ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition BJP and the Congress-Left alliance are the main contenders.
The TMC has fielded Debasish Banerjee, the BJP candidate is Dilip Saha, while the Left-backed Congress candidate is Byron Biswas.
The bypoll to the Sagardighi assembly seat was necessitated by the death of three-time TMC MLA and state minister Subrata Saha in December last year.
Apart from a minority population of over 60%, the rural seat also has a Scheduled Caste population of about 18.5% and a Scheduled Tribe population of 6.5%. It has about 2.3 lakh voters.
