This is the third incident this month when motorists have been in fatal accidents while trying to negotiate potholes or broken parts.
Bad roads have claimed the life of another driver this month. A 47-year-old man was killed when his two-wheeler skidded around a dug pit in the middle of Hesarghatta Main Road and hit barricades on Friday night. Barricades were put up for the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) work without adequate lighting, warnings or safety measures, a police official said.
This is the third incident this month when motorists have met with fatal accidents while trying to cross potholes or faulty stretches.
The deceased was identified as Anandappa S, who lived in T. Dasarahalli and worked in a private firm. He was returning home from work when the accident happened.
“He was near the Sri Krishna Cake Palace on Hesaraghatta Main Road but did not see the barricade or the pit in the middle of the road and fell down,” the police officer said.
The pit was allegedly dug by private contractors on behalf of BWSSB to replace the valve, but it was not closed and there were not enough barricades.
Shri Anandappa was seriously injured when he fell. Passers-by along with traffic police took him to a hospital in the area where he died in the early hours of Saturday.
case registered
While the police have registered a case against the contractors of the private company and the BWSSB engineers concerned, they have registered a case against the deceased motorcyclist under section 279 (speeding on a public road and under section 304 (A)). (Cause of death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
The accident happened just before the September 20 deadline for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to repair all potholes on the main roads.
Although in this case it was not a pothole-related death, motorists, especially two-wheelers, are at higher risk of plying on rough roads.
In the first week of September, a 75-year-old physically challenged senior citizen died while he was allegedly trying to navigate a pothole on Manganahalli Main Road. He died on the spot.
The Bangalore Development Authority, which is responsible for the maintenance of the road, said that the BWSSB has cut the road for laying some pipelines. But the contractor did not renovate the road.
A few days ago, a 25-year-old youth riding a two-wheeler had died after being hit by the wheel of a speeding minibus. However, in this case the police had registered a case against the bus driver and not the civic agency.
