Making the announcement, State Congress President Kamal Nath targeted Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and said that the Chief Minister is making many hollow promises to remain in power before the elections.

The Congress on Sunday said women in Madhya Pradesh will get a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 and LPG cylinders will be provided for Rs 500 if the party is voted to power in the upcoming assembly polls.

Making the announcement, state Congress president Kamal Nath criticized chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, saying the chief minister was making several empty promises to stay in power ahead of the elections.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress are trying to outdo each other to woo women voters in the state, which goes to polls later this year.

Weeks ago, Chouhan launched the “Laadli Bahna Yojana”, a monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 for women whose family income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh per annum. Recently, a provision of Rs 8,000 crore was made in the state budget proposal.

Chouhanji has mastered the art of making empty promises. He is announcing gifts but these promises will never be implemented till the elections. If the Congress government is formed in Madhya Pradesh, we will give Rs 1500 per month to women instead of Rs 1000. Besides, we are going to reduce the price of cooking cylinder to Rs 500 (which was more than Rs 1,100 now),” Nath said at a public meeting here.

The former chief minister said the people of the state wanted a change and were eager to vote for the Congress in large numbers to end Chouhan’s political career.

Chouhan had earlier accused the previous Kamal Nath-led Congress government of neglecting poor women. The number of women voters in Madhya Pradesh is 2,60,23,733, and in at least 18 of the 230 assembly constituencies, they outnumber men. These include tribal-dominated Balaghat, Mandla, Dindori, Alirajpur and Jhabua districts.

Officials said there has been an increase of 2.79 per cent in the number of new women voters, while it is 2.30 per cent for male voters. According to officials, out of 13.39 lakh new voters, 7.07 lakh are women.

After the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress, which won 114 seats in the 230-member house, formed a coalition government under the leadership of Nath. BJP had won 109 seats.

The Nath government fell in March 2020 after several MLAs loyal to then Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia defected to the BJP, paving the way for the return of Shivraj Singh Chouhan as chief minister.
