MPs Navneet Rana, Ravi Rana sent to judicial custody till May 6

A Mumbai court on Sunday sent MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana to judicial custody till May 6. The couple were arrested last evening for allegedly “creating enmity between different groups” over their threat to read Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav. Thackeray’s house.

The arrest was made on the basis of an FIR lodged by Shiv Sena workers under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. Section 153A is levied against those who “indecently condemn or attack any particular group or class of religion, caste, place of birth, residence, language, etc. or on the founders and prophets of any religion.”

A counter FIR was also registered against Shiv Sena workers for protesting outside Rana’s residence.
