New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the restoration and continuation of the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), which was suspended in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing a press conference after the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that the scheme has been restored for the remaining part of the financial year 2021-22. This scheme will continue till 2025-26.
He said that for the remaining period of 2021-22, Rs 2 crore per MP would be released in one installment.
He said that from 2022-23 to 2025-26 each MP would be released in two installments of Rs 2.5 crore at the rate of Rs 5 crore per annum.
In April last year, the government had suspended the MPLADS during 2020-21 and 2021-22, and said the funds would be used for the management of health services and the adverse impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Under this scheme, MPs can recommend development programs in their constituencies with an expenditure of Rs 5 crore every year.
