Muharram is celebrated as the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered to be the second holiest month after Ramadan. It is also called the month of Hijri or the month of Allah. This year Muharram began on July 31 and will end on August 28. The tenth day i.e. Ashura is being celebrated on 9th August. Muharram is celebrated to commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, son of Hazrat Ali and grandson of Prophet Muhammad. It marks the expression of sorrow over the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala that took place 14 centuries ago. Muslims honor the sacrifice of their lives by participating in mourning rituals. It is one of the most important months for the people of the Muslim community.
