In another blow to Independent MP Navneet Kaur-Rana and her MLA husband Ravi Rana, the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police may now register a case against the politician couple.
The development comes after Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut accused the Rana couple of taking Rs 80 lakh from builder and film financier Yusuf Lakdawala through illegal transactions. The latest case will be the fresh case against the Rana couple.
Lakdawala has been arrested earlier by EOW.
The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday sought a factual report from the Maharashtra government on the arrest of Independent Lok Sabha MP Navneet Rana and allegations of “inhuman treatment” by the police, officials said. The Amravati MP was arrested on Saturday for calling for chanting of Hanuman Chalisa along with her MLA-husband Ravi Rana outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence ‘Matoshree’ in Mumbai.
The home ministry has sought a factual report from the Maharashtra government on the allegations of Rana’s arrest and alleged “inhuman treatment” at Mumbai’s Khar police station, a home ministry official said. The move was taken after the Lok Sabha Privileges and Ethics Committee sought a report from the Maharashtra government from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Jailed Independent MP Navneet Kaur on Tuesday submitted a complaint to Nagpur Police, seeking registration of a case under the SC/ST Act for certain remarks made by her against Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut. The complaint was submitted by Navneet Rana’s personal assistant Vinod Guhe to Nagpur Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar.
In her complaint, the Lok Sabha MP from Amravati, who claims to be a Dalit, referred to a press conference in which Raut called her (and her MLA-husband Ravi Rana, who is under arrest) ‘Bunty Aur Babli’. said. in a Hindi film) and ‘420’ (Cheater). Without mentioning the politician couple, Rajya Sabha member Raut had warned, “Don’t mess with Shiv Sena and ‘Matoshree’ (Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s private residence in Mumbai), otherwise you will be buried 20 feet deep.” Navneet Rana also highlighted Raut’s statement in which he had said that if anyone tried to challenge ‘Matoshree’, “they should keep material ready for their last rites”.
Against the backdrop of these remarks, the Lok Sabha MP demanded registration of an offense against Raut under the stringent Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. When contacted, Commissioner of Police Kumar confirmed that the complaint had been received and said that the matter is being investigated.
Navneet Rana, MLA from Badnera in Amravati district and her husband Ravi Rana had on Saturday called for reciting Hanuman Chalisa (hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman) outside Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s personal home ‘Matoshree’. He eventually abandoned his plan, but was arrested by the Mumbai Police and booked under various sections of the IPC, including sedition and promoting enmity between different groups.
Meanwhile, the Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a writ petition filed by the MLA couple, seeking quashing of one of the two FIRs lodged against them under Section 353 of the IPC. The court said that the petitioners and all others holding public positions should act more responsibly. And show respect to other public figures.
A bench of Justices PB Varale and SM Modak observed, “As it is often said, with great power comes great responsibility.” He said that he did not find any merit in the petition filed by the Rana couple. However, the bench said that if the police decides to arrest Rana or take any other coercive action against him on the basis of the second FIR, it will have to give him 72 hours’ notice.
