After Thackeray’s death in 2012, a memorial was erected near the tree.

A Gulmohar tree planted by Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park ground in central Mumbai fell on Monday due to heavy rains and strong winds. After Thackeray’s death in 2012, a memorial was erected near the tree.

In a statement released later in the evening, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said it had managed to replant the fallen tree. “Between 11:45 pm and midnight on Sunday, the BMC ward office was alerted about the tree falling. G North ward officials decided to replant it at the same spot. A wider and deeper ditch was dug. Root hormones were applied to the tree with fertilizers before planting,” the BMC statement said.

Earlier in the day, former Mumbai mayor and Shiv Sena leader Kishori Pednekar had said that the party wants the tree to be planted at the same spot.
