After winning the four-month long, deadly battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, Mumbai’s Devanand Telkot is all set to appear for the interview round of Civil Services Exam. Soon after cracking his prelims and mains, the 26-year-old had contracted the COVID-19 virus and thus lost all hope of appearing for the interview round or personality test. Thanks to his determination, the young man has not only recovered after 80 per cent damage to his lungs, but has also got a chance to re-take his personality test as UPSC agrees to conduct an exclusive interview for him. has gone.
Discharged after a month-long battle with COVID and post COVID complications, the 26-year-old was discharged from Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hyderabad on Wednesday and is set to appear for interview .
Although, this was not his first attempt at civil services, he tried to crack both preliminary and mains in 2019 too but could not clear the interview round. Unfazed, the 26-year-old then went to Delhi for coaching to fulfill his dream, where he got infected with the coronavirus and his health deteriorated.
Over the course of a few months, his family members took him to Delhi and Mumbai for treatment. After 80 per cent of his heart and lungs were damaged, the family took him to Hyderabad on the advice of doctors. On 15 May he was admitted to Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences – KIMS, Hyderabad and the team of doctors led by Dr Bhaskar Rao rescued the child.
The family got help from Hyderabad’s Rachakonda CP Mahesh Bhagwat who arranged a bed at KIMS Hospital. With the help of some IPS officers, the CP also helped to some extent financially for the treatment of Devanand through donors. Some friends who took coaching for civil services also came in support of Devanand. While the CP raised Rs 1 crore with the help of IPS officers who collected donations from some donors. Even the KIMS hospital management waived off Rs 20 lakh for his treatment. The team of Heart and Lung Specialist Dr. Sandeep Athwar made constant efforts to cure him with consistent treatment and health care. The team offered ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support to Devanand for more than three months in the hospital.
Soon after recovering, he had post-COVID complications that affected his muscles. To overcome this problem, doctors successfully performed physiotherapy treatment and Devanand was cured. He was discharged from KIMS on Wednesday.
After the attack of Kovid, this young man, who fought for life for four months, has now recovered on the strength of self-confidence. His aim of getting civil services reduced to serious health problems. He overcame health problems and won his battle against all odds. Hailing from a middle-class family, his father was a private employee and his mother a homemaker, he was overjoyed that his son was selected for the civil services.
Fortunately, UPSC agreed to conduct an exclusive interview for Devanand Telkot. It has postponed the interview date from May 5 to September 22 last. Telkot has already cleared the preliminary exam as well as the main exam.
