A Muslim man has been arrested and sent to judicial custody under the recently announced Karnataka Right to Freedom of Religion Act, for ‘converting a woman on the pretext of marrying him’.
According to Vinayak Patil, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bengaluru North Division, a case has been registered against Syed Muin on the complaint of the woman’s mother.
The missing case was registered on October 6 following a complaint from the mother of the 18-year-old woman the previous day.
After this, on October 8, the woman and the man were interrogated at the police station.
The woman’s mother again filed a complaint on Thursday night that on the pretext of marrying her daughter, Syed Muin had converted to another religion.
Accordingly, a case has been registered under Section 5 of the Karnataka Right to Freedom of Religion Act and the accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody, Patil told reporters.
He said that according to the complainant the conversion took place at Penukonda in Andhra Pradesh.
Under the Act, any aggrieved person, his parent, brother, sister, or any other person, by blood, marriage or adoption, may file a first information report of such conversion, which is specified in section-3. violates the provisions. Whoever contravenes the provisions shall be punished with imprisonment as per law.
