Mysore zoo to build another home for orangutans

Bank Note Paper Mill India has agreed to fund ₹99.20 lakh for the construction of the second enclosure.

Help for the Mysore Zoo is coming as Banknote Paper Mill India Pvt Ltd has agreed to donate an amount of ₹99.20 lakh for the construction of another enclosure for orangutans.

It signed an MoU in this regard with the Mysore Zoo as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

This is the second time the company is helping the zoo as it had earlier donated ₹70 lakh for the construction of an orangutan house as part of the CSR initiative. The construction was done recently and two pairs of oranges brought from Singapore and Malaysia are on display.

Zoo executive director Ajit Kulkarni told Hindu Another enclosure for habitat orangutans became necessary to ensure the species’ new bloodline and captive breeding of the endangered species. This required a large space and so we proposed another enclosure for the species. He said that Paper Mill Limited has agreed to fund the project.

The zoo received two pairs of orangutans from Singapore and Malaysia as it managed to execute another major international animal exchange deal. A 17-year-old male, Merlin, and a 13-year-old female, Atina, arrived from the zoo in Singapore, while a five-year-old male, Afa, and a 7-year-old female, Minnie, were brought from the zoo in Malaysia. , In return, the Mysore Zoo has given away two pairs of giraffes.

According to zoo records, the last time the zoo displayed an orangutan was in the 70s and after that zoo officials made best efforts to get an orangutan pair.
