Nagpur Metro sets record for longest double decker viaduct

Nagpur Metro has successfully created a Guinness World Record by constructing a 3,140 meter long double-decker viaduct (metro) and this was achieved by Wardha Road in Nagpur.

The 3.14 kilometer long double decker viaduct on Wardha Road has three metro stations – Chhatrapati Nagar, Jai Prakash Nagar and Ujjwal Nagar. These stations require special planning that is station specific to meet the functional requirements of Themetro duly incorporating site specific constraints and double decker viaduct requirements. The engineering thought process, conceptualization, design and execution of these stations is no less than a challenge.

Initially, the alignment of the highway flyover and metro rail Wardha Road on the same existing highway, with independent piers in the middle of the proposed alternate locations. Later it was reviewed and it was decided to integrate the highway flyover and metro rail to build a double-decker viaduct.

The double-decker viaduct carries the highway flyover on the first level and the metro rail on the second level, making it a three-tier transport system with the existing highway at ground level. This helped in avoiding additional land acquisition thereby saving land cost and reducing construction time and project cost.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari appreciated the effort of Nagpur Metro and tweeted, “Another feather in the cap! Team NHAI and Maha on achieving Guinness Book of World Record in Nagpur by constructing longest double decker viaduct.” Hearty congratulations to Metro. (3.14 KM) Highway with flyover and metro rail supported on single column.

“The project has already got records from Asia Book and India Book. Now it is indeed a proud moment for us to receive this prestigious award. In another tweet, Nitin Gadkari said, I heartily thank and salute the incredible engineers, officers and workers who worked round the clock to make this possible.

“The 3.14 km double-decker viaduct on Wardha Road in Nagpur, Maharashtra was opened for metro rail traffic on 5 March 2019 and for highway traffic on 13 November 2020, the longest double-decker viaduct on any metro rail system, According to a statement from Guinness World Records, London.

The double decker via-duct with a length of 3.14 km has already been certified by the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records as the longest structure in Asia and India.
