Naini Jail Prisoners Excel In Online Chess Tournament | Allahabad News – Times of India

Prayagraj: Prisoners of nanny Central Jail defeated their counterparts from Bhubaneswar, Bhopal and Jaipur on the first day of All India Online Chess Championship (Jail) 2022 on Friday.
Jailor RK Singh told TOI: “160 prisoners lodged in 20 jails across the country, including three from UP- Naini, Lucknow and Varanasi, are participating in a two-day-themed championship organized by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. Parivartan – Jail to Shaan Tak.” Prisoners of Odisha, Delhi and other jails Tamil NaduMaharashtra and Madhya Pradeshare also participating.
He added eight prisoners of Naini Jail- Dharmaraj Yadav, Chandra Mohan, Rajesh KumarSatchidanand, Vakil Ahmed, Mohammad Umar, Nitesh Kumar And Shalu Sonkar– is part of the team. Naini’s team also drew 2-2 points over their Tihar Central Jail (Delhi) counterparts and the same teams will play each other on Saturday.
Singh said four teams will enter the semi-finals out of which two will advance to the final. The winning team will participate in the Intercontinental Online Chess Competition for Prisoners to be held on the International Day of Education at the prison on 13 and 14 October.
A total of 20 countries, including India, have registered for the competition.
The jailer said: “Two four-man teams of prisoners who have excelled in playing chess offline and online were formed. A coach was also engaged for the last four months to train the prisoners.
Prison officials claimed that such an initiative helps in boosting the confidence of prisoners so that they can pursue a career in indoor and outdoor sports after their release from jail. Note, prisoners are also taught inside prisons and many pursue higher education while serving their sentences.
