November 7 is observed as National Cancer Awareness Day to raise awareness about cancer, the second leading cause of death globally. The date of the occasion was announced in September 2014 by Dr. Harsh Vardhan, who was then the Health Minister. This special date was chosen because it is the birth anniversary of a prominent scientist, Madame Curie, who is remembered for her efforts and contribution in the fight against cancer. He is honored for the discovery of radium and polonium.
It was his remarkable work that played an important role in the development of nuclear energy and radiotherapy to treat the deadly disease.
In 1975, the National Cancer Control Program was started in India. The vision behind this was to establish cancer treatment facilities in the country. In 1984-85, the vision changed to focus on early detection and prevention of cancer.
About 1.1 million new cases are reported in India every year. The survival chances in India are very low as two-thirds of the cases are diagnosed at an advanced stage. Lung cancer and oral cancer are the major causes of death in men, while breast cancer and oral cavity cancer account for a large number of cancer cases in women. It is estimated that one woman dies of cervical cancer every 8 minutes in India.
Early detection of cancer at an early stage can significantly reduce the number of deaths. It is also an essential part of the fight against cancer as it significantly reduces the cost of treatment as compared to the cost of treatment at a later stage.
On this day, people are encouraged to visit government hospitals, CGHS and municipal clinics for free tests. The distribution of information booklets to raise awareness about cancer prevention methods and early symptoms is a common way of celebrating this day.
