Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintila, who is on a visit to India, has said his country is likely to become a “NATO member this summer”. Sweden joins US-led defense alliance. The Russian military offensive in Ukraine has raised concerns in these Nordic countries with increased calls for the abandonment of military non-alignment.
Speaking to our Principal Diplomatic Correspondent Siddhant Sibal, Minister Lintila said “Finland strongly condemns the Russian attack … people are panicked and what happens next” but “I must say, the EU is the first in this matter.” stronger than ever.” The Economy Minister of Finland is in India with a large business delegation and will be meeting several ministers from the Central Government of India.
India’s trade with Finland has crossed one billion US dollars (870 million euros) and is in favor of Finland. Business in services is growing and has crossed US$1.5 billion (1.3 billion euros) with several Indian IT companies based in Finland. According to Indian government estimates, Finnish companies invested US$497 million between April, 2000 and December, 2019. Within the European Union, Finland ranks 12th among the countries investing in India. More than 100 Finnish companies have operations in India, including investments. Nokia, Kone, Wartsila, UPM, Fortum, Metso, Huhtamaki, Salcomp, Ahlstrom, etc. have established their manufacturing facilities in India.
Siddhant Sibal: What is your focus here in Delhi?
Mika Lintila: India is a very important and interesting partner, Finland is the total export country, more than 40% of our GDP comes from exports. In this situation we need more and more companies to export, invest in Finland etc and India is very important and has great potential. We already have good relations between our countries. I want to keep the doors open for companies. There are 13 companies in my delegation and I am very much interested in collaborating with Indian companies.
Siddhant Sibal: You are going to meet the policy makers, what are you going to tell them, what can Finland offer?
Mika Lintila: For example, we can collaborate in research or what is our biggest challenge, climate change. Finland is one of the forerunners of new technologies in the energy sector, such as the circular economy. We have a lot to offer in the entire energy sector. This may be an area in which we can collaborate more.
Siddhant Sibal: Basically, you mention clean energy..
Mika Lintila: Last year, over 50% of our energy was renewable energy. We have different ways, like wind power, a little bit of solar power, not as much as India, biomass etc. Which has a big role to play is a waste of energy. I am 100% sure, we can provide you solutions where you can use waste into energy in a better and better way.
Siddhant Sibal: Russian invasion of Ukraine, what is your government’s stand on it?
Mika Lintila: Finland strongly condemns the Russian attack. It is completely violent against international law. Of course the war in Europe is very complicated, people are nervous about what happens next. I must say, the EU is stronger than ever in this matter.
Siddhant Sibal: But there is a lot of dependence on Russian energy, what is your government doing to reduce it?
Mika Lintila: Actually, we have a pretty good position, because oil, for example, we can get from some other country. Gas accounts for about 5% of our energy… but this could be a major challenge for Germany which uses a lot of Russian gas.
Siddhant Sibal: What can you do to help the European continent reduce its dependence on Russian energy?
Mika Lintila: We already have independent production in the energy sector but certainly as I said, there is a Central European country where they use a lot of gas. They try to find new ways to be who they are, what kind of energy they have. Everyone wants to run out of fossil energy, and now everyone wants to run out of Russian energy.
Siddhant Sibal: Will your country join NATO? Because this is something that has been discussed, and we have seen the response from Moscow, if you and your neighboring countries, there will be consequences.
Mika Lintila: Of course the security situation is different than it was a few months ago. It may be possible that, both countries, or may I say terminated sides, it may be possible that we become members of NATO this summer.
Siddhant Sibal: Indian PM will go to Denmark for India Nordic summit, we are also going to have Nordic leaders summit, what will be the main focus?
Micah Lintila: I don’t know what will be discussed but I can imagine they are looking at the bigger picture in the security situation globally and especially in Europe. Of course, they discussed how to continue with Russia. Unfortunately, that Russia a few months ago, I can’t see that old Russia. These restrictions are strict.
Siddhant Sibal: Are European sanctions acting on the Russian leadership?
Mika Lintila: I think sanctions are working better and better and of course the main question is the energy sector especially gas, oil as well. I’m sure the next element in sanctions is oil. In the financial sector, the restrictions are tighter and they are working very well.
Siddhant Sibal: How has the Russian invasion of Ukraine changed global geopolitics?
Mika Lintila: From the finish side, but rather thorough. If we’re judging, we’re trying to get NATO members, it’s completely changed the policy.
