KYIV: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (nato) Deputy General Secretary Mirsia Joan confirmed that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr zelensky Invited to the Summit of the Alliance in Madrid.
The Kyiv Independent reported that the summit is scheduled to take place in Madrid, Spain on June 28 and June 29 respectively.
Joan said in an official statement that the summit would include for the first time NATO partners from the Pacific region – Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea.
“Of course, the expansion of NATO, and the policy of open doors will be an important topic of discussion. We hope that Finland and Sweden will join our ranks. And of course, we have to decide on this Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky will be present at our summit in some form or the other. In Madrid,” said Mircia Joan.
According to local media reports, Zelensky’s joining the summit was announced during a discussion organized by Politico.
Earlier in the day, Europa Press, citing Spanish government sources, said Spain planned to send Zelensky a formal invitation to the summit in Madrid on June 29 and 30. However, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmitro Kuleba acknowledged that he does not expect positive decisions for Ukraine at the NATO summit.
In addition, NATO defense ministers will meet in Brussels on June 15-16, the coalition said on Friday, adding that the European Union, Georgia, Finland, Sweden and Ukraine have been invited to participate in the event.
The meeting will begin with a working dinner where Finland, Georgia, Sweden, Ukraine and The European Union invited and will be chaired by NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg.
On 24 February, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, responding to calls for help from the separate republics of Donetsk and Luhansk to counter the aggression of Ukrainian troops.
About 14 million Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict United Nations (UN) estimates and most of the displaced are women and children.
The conflict has left 15.7 million Ukrainians in need of humanitarian aid, some of them lacking access to water and electricity.
