New Delhi: National Council of Educational Research and Training (N c E r T) will soon be a ‘deemed-to-be-university’ in the de novo category.

As per the agenda note of the meeting, NCERT as the apex organization for school education conducts various activities and programmes, which include educational research and innovation, curriculum development, development of curricula and teaching-learning materials.
The degree awarding bodies for undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by regional institutions of education of NCERT are separately affiliated state University and a Central University (NEHU).
“Currently, NCERT with its existing infrastructure and academic programs at Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Research levels is working at par with the university system of the country.
“The grant of deemed-to-be-university status to NCERT under the de novo category will ensure smooth and robust academic functioning,” the agenda note said.
NCERT was established in 1961 by the Government of India under the Societies Act to assist and advise the government in the matter of school education. It is to be noted that in the recent past, NCERT made efforts to get Institute of National Importance (INI) status. INI status to NCERT would have been unique as no institution of school education has been accorded INI status. However, the proposal could not get the approval of the Union Cabinet.
Advocating the Deemed University status, the detailed project states that the country lacks skilled professionals in the fields of curriculum development, school-based assessment, inclusive education, pre-school education etc. Specialization to prepare professionals for education in the fields, although specially designed pre-service and in-service programs have multiplier effects.
