NCP MP Supriya Sule has sought the help of Indian students studying medicine in China from Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, demanding that their return to the neighboring country be facilitated by the resumption of offline courses and till then Practical classes should be arranged in India. In a letter to Mandaviya, Sule said students are attending his lectures online in India and are concerned because of the uncertainties surrounding the reopening of the Chinese border and lifting of travel restrictions.

A large number of Indian students had come back to India after China closed all universities following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. China had restricted travel by suspending visas and residence permits with effect from March 27, 2020, in view of the pandemic.

I met with delegation of Indian students to China and Foreign Medical Graduates Parents Association (FMGPA). Sule said in the letter dated April 13, “He has made certain demands… Requesting you to look into the matter and help our students, a copy of which he shared on Twitter on Wednesday.” In their letter to the Baramati MP, the students and the FMGPA said that they are facing financial and mental stress due to the uncertainties surrounding the reopening of the Chinese border and lifting of travel restrictions.

The students have demanded that arrangements be made for their return to China or practical classes should be provided as per their syllabus in India till they go back to China. Continued efforts to facilitate early return of students to their respective Chinese universities, the students demanded in a letter to Sule. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had on March 25 raised the issue of Indian students returning to China to resume their studies with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and expressed hope that Beijing would take a “non-discriminatory approach” on it.
