NEET, JEE exams likely to merge with CUET, here’s what UGC has to offer – Times of India

The government is reportedly exploring the possibility of merging the national engineering and medical entrance examinations into the existing Common University Entrance Test.QET,
UGC President M Jagadesh Kumar said on Friday that JEE (Main) and NEET under one umbrella will help in reducing the burden of the students. He also said that the idea is in line with the Centre’s National Policy on Education, 2020.

Hence, making CUET an entrance test for all. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar on Friday said the government is exploring the possibility of merging the National Engineering and Medical Entrance Test (JEE and NEET) with the existing Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
All to note that CUET was launched this year for undergraduate admissions in 90 universities including 45 central universities and officials said that 1.05 million students applied for CUET, making it the second largest exam after NEET, Which received 1.8 million applications. Whereas the UGC President said that National Policy on Education ,NEP) 2020 also envisages “One Nation, One Admission” and will ease the burden of students appearing for multiple entrance examinations for higher education.
The UGC chairman further said that the government is contemplating to introduce integrated entrance examination at the earliest, preferably by next year, “We have three major entrance exams, which are NEET, JEE (Main) and CUET and a large number of students are getting involved in it. These entrances are common. And all these exams are conducted by National Testing Agency ,NTATherefore, we are thinking why not use CUET score alone for admission in multiple subjects.”
He also mentioned that, “NEET requires Biology, Physics and Chemistry, JEE requires Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. All these subjects are already in CUET. Therefore, using CUET scores for admission to medical and engineering colleges will not be an issue.” The Union Ministry of Education and the UGC have started discussions to prepare the stakeholders, he mentioned.
The UGC will form a committee comprising experts from various fields to look into the current forms of the entrance examination, and the UGC chairman said, “The committee will work on formulating recommendations for a unified entrance examination. These recommendations will then be shared with the stakeholders for consultation and feedback and based on that the Ministry and the UGC will decide the modalities of the examination. There’s a lot of planning to be done.”
