Nepal Election: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba elected for 7th consecutive term from his home district of Dhankuta

Kathmandu: Sher Bahadur Deuba, the prime minister of the caretaker government and president of the ruling Nepali Congress, has been elected for a 7th consecutive term from his home district of Dhankuta. Deuba, 77, secured 25,534 votes against his nearest rival, independent candidate Sagar Dhakal, 31, who got 1,302 votes. Deuba has never lost any parliamentary election in his political career of five decades.

A PTI report said that the ruling Nepali Congress has so far won 10 seats in the House of Representatives (HOR), while it is leading in 46 other constituencies. Ahead on 42 seats. Elections to the HOR and seven provincial assemblies were held on Sunday and the counting of votes began on Monday.

Nepali Congress President Deuba is currently holding the post of Prime Minister for the fifth time. Deuba has been elected for the seventh consecutive term from Dadeldhura constituency in Far West Nepal with a huge margin of votes.

Sagar Dhakal, a young engineer who had an altercation with Deuba five years ago during a public debate on the BBC’s Common Questions programme, decided to challenge Deuba, saying that it was now time for youths to enter politics. There should be a chance and senior people like Deuba should be given rest.

Of the 275 members of parliament, 165 will be elected through direct voting, while the remaining 110 will be elected through a proportional election system. Similarly, out of a total of 550 members of the provincial assemblies, 330 would be directly elected and 220 would be elected proportionally.
