Android customers can now play five titles, including two based on the streaming company’s hit show ‘Stranger Things’
Now playing on Netflix: Videogames.
Netflix Inc said on Tuesday that customers with Android phones or tablets can start playing mobile games in its app, a long-standing ambition for the streaming company. A Netflix spokesperson said the game is expected to be available for Apple Inc. devices in the coming months.
The company said a Netflix subscription is required to play, but there’s no additional charge. There’s also no advertising in the game or in-app purchases, both common ways mobile-game companies make money.
The move comes as the streaming company explores ways to attract new customers and get current customers to spend more time on its app beyond just watching “Squid Game” or “Bridgeton.”
Netflix earlier this year tapped game-industry veteran Mike Verdeau to oversee its push into videogames — an area that allows the company to stand out among a growing list of streaming competitors, including The Walt Disney Company’s Disney+. can help to be. Netflix is the largest streaming service, with around 214 million subscribers.
The company said Tuesday that it is starting out with five titles, including a card game and two games based on “Stranger Things,” its hit supernatural show.
“We are in the early days of creating a great gaming experience,” the company said, adding that it plans to add to its offerings in the months ahead.
