emergency in sri lanka

Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency on Wednesday amid ongoing protests against the president and the prime minister. Leader Gotabaya Rajapaksa, 73, who promised to resign, has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as acting president, hours after he fled the country.

Thousands of protesters waving Lankan flags violated the emergency and surrounded the PM’s office building. Police fired tear gas at protesters, who broke through a barricade and stormed the Prime Minister’s Office demanding his resignation.

Last week, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said Sri Lanka is now a bankrupt country as it grapples with the worst economic crisis in decades.
