Although cases of breast cancer in men are rare, a study that links the disease to impotence has come to the fore. In this study, researchers studied men diagnosed with breast cancer in England and Wales in 1998. Of these, 112 people reported being impotent and 383 said they had not had children.
The Cancer Research Institute in London and the authors of this study examined the relationship between impotence and breast cancer risk. The findings of this study have been published in the Journal of Breast Cancer Research.
Michael Jones, a senior researcher at the Institute of Cancer, London, and colleagues studied men diagnosed with breast cancer between 2005 and 2017. These 1998 men were then compared with 1597 men in the control group who were not blood related. Of these, 80 men reported impotence.
The study found invasive breast cancer tumors to be related to impotence in men. These tumors are cancer cells that develop in one organ and spread to another. The study found that 47 of the people in the control group, about 2.6%, had breast cancer, while 22 (1.4%) did not. In this case, the researchers were not able to link breast cancer risk to infertility.
The researchers found no significant association between infertility and in situ breast cancer, which is not aggressive. The study also included alcohol, smoking, family background of breast cancer and risk factors for liver disease to make the analysis more sensitive in their study. However, this also did not play a role in the outcome of the study.
Mr Jones also said that not enough is known about the causes of breast cancer in men. He said that the cases are few and the studies done are also limited.
