New UAE criminal code among 40 legal changes in reform push – Times of India

Dubai: United Arab Emirates said on Saturday that a new criminal code would go into effect in January, in what it called the most comprehensive legal reform gulf History of the state.
state news agency WAM Told that the government is making changes in 40 laws this year. However, it was not made clear which changes – which pertain to commercial companies, online safety, trade, copyright, residence, narcotics and social issues – were new and which were previously reported.
One change that appears to be new is the ratification of a federal crime and punishment law, effective January 2, 2022, designed to better protect women, domestic workers and public safety.

The major changes so far in tackling the so-called “honour killings” in November 2020 include reducing premarital sex and alcohol consumption and scrapping leniency provisions.
Saturday’s statement adds clarity that previously lacked the status of premarital sex and the children born to them – suggesting that the parents are not required to be married.
“Any couple conceiving a child outside marriage shall be required to marry or accept the child alone or jointly and shall be required to provide identity cards and travel documents in accordance with the laws of the country, including Neither one is national.”
If the parents do not accept and care for the child, a criminal case with imprisonment for two years will be brought.
Other recent changes by the UAE include the introduction of longer-term visas as a way to attract and retain talent and encourage more businesses to set up shop.
This month the Emirate of Abu Dhabi introduced its own reform – a novel secular family law that aims to make itself more attractive to expatriates.
