New Zealand opener Will Young was unlucky to be dismissed lbw in the second innings at the end of the fourth day’s play of the ongoing first Test against India on Sunday. But part of it was the reaction of Young and opening partner Tom Latham and their inability to make a quick decision on whether they should review the on-field umpire’s decision. Young was declared lbw off Ravichandran Ashwin. The ball was spinning fast and Young was hit on the front foot.

The batsman reviewed after a brief discussion with his opening partner Latham, but his appeal was rejected as he did not review in time and unfortunately went back to the dugout.

Replays also showed that the ball was going down the leg side.

It was a major setback for the Blackcaps as Young played well in the first innings and looked to be in great form. New Zealand need 280 runs to win the first Test on day five and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series, but have nine wickets with a full day to play. New Zealand will resume play on the fifth day at 4/1.
Earlier, India had declared their second innings at 234/7, leading the Kiwis by 283 runs. Shreyas Iyer (65) and Wriddhiman Saha (61*) scored brilliant half-centuries as India managed to recover from a difficult situation after a top-order collapse on Sunday.

For the Black Caps, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson were the picks of the bowlers, with three wickets each to their name. During this, Ejaz Patel also took a wicket.

Initially, India had scored 345 runs in the first innings, thanks to Iyer’s maiden Test century in the longest format of the game.

In reply, New Zealand could not take advantage of a brilliant start by openers Latham (95) and Young (89) as the Kiwis were bowled out for 296 thanks to Axar Patel’s five-wicket haul.
