NGO sets up biogas plant in Krishnagiri village

Kudugal, a city-based voluntary organization working towards sparrow conservation, is now engaged in developing energy self-sufficiency in rural areas.

The organization has recently started an initiative to create awareness against plastic waste and to set up biogas plants to provide fuel in rural areas apart from the benefits of solar as an alternative energy source.

Trust’s founder D. Ganesan said, initially 10 biogas plants are being set up with Lennox International at Thaliyur village in Krishnagiri district. “This will help the residents of the village to deal with the rising LPG prices. To popularize renewable and sustainable energy from waste, we plan to extend it to households and other rural areas in Chennai as well,” he said.

The organization is also involved in energy audit to collect data on energy consumption in the village. There are plans to provide energy saving equipment and install solar panels for energy efficiency. “We want to develop Thaliyur as a model village and replicate this initiative in other places as well. We are also engaged in distributing Nest Boxes in places other than Chennai. Government schools are also being targeted for this initiative.

About 3,000 nest boxes have been distributed for sparrow conservation in places including Tenkasi, Thanjavur and Krishnagiri in collaboration with some faculty members of SRM Institute of Science and Technology.
