Nikola, Proterra sign battery supply deal for semi-trucks

Electric truck maker Nikola Corp said on Tuesday that it has entered into an agreement with Protera Inc for the long-term supply of batteries for its semi-trucks.

Production of Nikola’s trucks equipped with Protera’s batteries is expected in the fourth quarter of 2022, with prototype systems being delivered to the truck maker in the second quarter, the company said.

Earlier in October 2021, Nikola said that it has entered into a long-term supply agreement with LG Energy Solutions to supply the batteries from 2022 to 2029.

Nikola has entered into letters of intent with logistics and trucking companies in recent days to sell hundreds of its Tray Battery electric trucks and fuel cell trucks.

“With increasing demand for Nikola Tre BEVs and FCEVs, we have actively pursued battery supply through a dual source strategy,” Nikola Chief Executive Officer Mark Russell said in a statement on Tuesday.

Protera, which makes batteries for commercial electric vehicles, said in December that it would open a new battery manufacturing factory in South Carolina as demand picks up.
