“I would like to thank everyone for their support, this medal holds great significance for me. It was my dream to win a medal in Paralympics. I am from Una district of Himachal Pradesh where the scope of sports is very less. I am proud of myself. I feel because even my journey was very difficult,” Nishad told ANI.
He said, “I got full support from the government. SAI and TOPS helped me with everything including equipment, diet and training. I want to ask the youth to set their own goals and give their 100 per cent to achieve them. ”

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Thakur on Tuesday felicitated Tokyo Paralympic Silver medalist Nishad Kumar.
Nishad reached Delhi on Tuesday. MoS Shri Nisith Pramanik also attended the event. Nishad, who hails from Himachal Pradesh, won a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 category with a jump of 2.06 meters at the Tokyo Paralympics.

At the Paralympic Games, Nishad equaled the Asian record set by him earlier this year with a jump of 2.06m. He is training in the national camp Sai Bangalore Under the guidance of coach Satyanarayana. The Government of India duly assisted the Nishads with an amount of Rs 10.50 lakh from the Lakshya Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) to facilitate overseas performance visits and more than four international competitions before the Games and Rs 10.21 lakh from the annual calendar for training. Nishad has had a roller-coaster of a calendar year. He tested positive for Covid-19 twice, but he continued to improve and set two personal bests in 2021. He jumped 2.07 meters Para Athletics Selection Test held in Delhi in June, and this helped him secure a spot in the Indian squad for the Tokyo Paralympics. He won a gold medal in the high jump T47 category at the Faiza Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai just before the pandemic and repeated the feat in the same competition by winning the elusive gold in 2021 as well.
