Nitin Gadkari questioned the integrity of major automakers in providing different safety features for India as compared to other global markets.

To enhance the existing safety protocols in all passenger vehicles, Road Transport and Highways Minister (MoRTH) Nitin Gadkari announced the approval of a draft notification for India NCAP or New Car Assessment Programme, which will test accident potential. Number of PVs sold in India by giving them a star rating based on performance. However, some automakers said the scheme would make cars more expensive and exclude a section of potential buyers. In response, Gadkari questioned the integrity of these manufacturers in providing different security features for India as compared to other global markets.

Speaking to the media recently, at a conference organized by a leading IT company in the capital, Gadkari said, “We have decided to have mandatory provision of six airbags in cars, even in the economic model. Now, some companies are making such cars in India which do not conform to international standards. But they are making cars of the same model, which comply with international standards for the overseas market. I can never understand it.”

The reaction is likely directed at Maruti Suzuki India President, RC Bhargava, who had highlighted that such a move would make the cars more expensive and drive out a section of potential buyers, making it unfeasible for the general population.
