Defending his decision to pull troops out of Afghanistan – which resulted in the Taliban taking control – US President Joe Biden said ‘I have no regrets for what I did’. However, he said he felt bad about what happened after “as a result of the incompetence of the Taliban”.

He said, “I make no apologies for what I did. If we had stayed, we would have been asked to withdraw between 20,000-50,000 soldiers. Would I be aware of what was happening as a result of the Taliban’s incompetence? Feel bad? Yes, I do.”

“I have great concern for the women and men who were blown over the line in a terrorist attack at the airport,” he said.

At least 103 people were killed and more than 143 were injured in two explosions at Kabul airport in August last year. 13 American soldiers, including 12 sailors and a naval doctor, were among those killed in the Kabul airport bombings, and 18 others were injured.

On August 31, 2021, the United States completed its troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending a 20-year war that culminated in the return of the militant Taliban to power.

Since then, Afghanistan has been battling a massive humanitarian crisis. With international funds freezing after the Taliban takeover, many are facing starvation. Afghan women and girls are also protesting for their rights, which have been curtailed by the conservative regime.
