Here in Coimbatore, a couple has obtained a ‘no caste, no religion’ certificate for their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. The couple – Naresh Karthik and Gayatri – wanted to admit their daughter Wilma to kindergarten, but all schools insisted on caste and religion certificates. But, the parents said that they are not inclined to get the certificate as they feel that their daughter wants to teach love and equality in schools.
After searching educational institutions that did not insist on such certificates, Naresh Karthik contacted various officials and met District Magistrate GS Sameeran.
A close friend of Karthik said on Monday that he had asked Karthik to approach the North Coimbatore tehsildar, citing a 1973 Tamil Nadu government order that religion and caste were not mandatory for his children to enter schools.
The couple then met the Tehsildar, who asked them to give an affidavit, stating that the parents knew that by obtaining the ‘No Caste, No Religion’ certificate, their child would not be eligible for caste and religion. will not be eligible for government reservation or privileges. He said the couple obtained the certificate and it mentions that their daughter does not belong to any caste or religion.
According to Karthik, most of the public was not aware of such a certificate, he said.
