The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has clarified that it has not changed its policies regarding the use of different languages ​​for official functions. It said that the institution attaches utmost importance to the use of the local language in its communication and interactions with patients and other members of the public.

In a press note, JIPMER Director Rakesh Agarwal said that contrary to reports in a section of the media, there has been no change in its policies in the use of different languages ​​and circulars of regular nature have been issued similar to those issued from time to time in the past. were. Keeping in view the policies and orders of the Govt.

The Institute had in fact issued several circulars, one of which clearly stated that: “As per the Official Language Policy of the Union, the name plates/sign boards are to be displayed by the Central Government for the information of the public. Non-Hindi Offices located in the speaking areas (Region C) shall be written in the regional language (i.e. Tamil), Hindi and English, and the languages ​​shall be in the order described above, and the letters of the script of all the languages ​​shall be of the same size.”

As per the circular, name plates, sign boards, letter heads etc. should be prepared both in Hindi and in English for internal use of the office.

With regard to another circular reportedly specifying the use of ‘Hindi only’, it is clarified that the text in it reads: “As far as possible in Hindi” and there is no emphasis on the use of Hindi.

JIPMER also said that the Hindi cell has been known by the same name for more than 30 years and there has been no change in the recent past. There were also Hindi cells in other central government organizations located in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka etc.

“The Institute wishes to assure the public that it continues to follow the policies of the Government as in the past, with no recent changes. The institute has served the people of the region for many years, including during the COVID-19 pandemic, and will continue to do so in future also,” it said.
