No more unknown callers, Govt working on its ‘Truecaller-like’ framework: Report

Telecom Regulatory Authority India (TRAI) is working on a new framework which will essentially flash the name of the caller on the phone screen of the recipient. Currently, the name flashes on the phone screen only when the number is saved in the contact list. According to news agency PTI, quoting a ‘top official’, TRAI will soon start consultations on devising a mechanism to flash the KYC-based name of the caller on the phone screen. There are apps like Truecaller which help users to identify the callers when the number is not saved. However, it has limitations as most of the data on the app is crowdsourced.

PTI notes that TRAI has received a reference from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to initiate consultations on the same. TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said that discussions on this are expected to start in a few months.

“We just got a reference, and we will start work on it soon. As per KYC the name will appear when someone calls,” Vaghela told the news agency. “This mechanism will enable the display of the name on the phone screen, as per the norms of DoT, as per the KYC done by the telecom companies,” he said.

Despite efforts by the government and smartphone OEMs to tackle spam calls, the move could bring transparency to the entire calling network. Since this move is just a reference at this point, the actual timeline of development remains unclear and may take several years to be fully completed. The ‘experts’ told TRAI that the KYC-based caller identification mechanism will protect users from spam calls and rising cases of frauds.
