A top state police officer on Wednesday banned New Year’s Eve celebrations on beaches across Tamil Nadu. Director General of Police C Silendra Babu said people are advised not to congregate in public places and those driving after consuming alcohol will be arrested.
He said the state government has also advised against crowding as it may increase the spread of coronavirus, including the Omicron strain.
“There is no permission to celebrate New Year’s Eve on beaches in Tamil Nadu. People are urged to celebrate at their homes without causing inconvenience to others,” the DGP said in a press statement.
He said the vehicles would be further intensified on New Year’s Eve.
Action will be taken against those involved in inappropriate behavior, motorcycle-racing and those who disturb the peace. The officer also mentioned surveillance using cameras on police patrol vehicles to maintain law and order.
Restaurants and boarding and lodging will be allowed to function till 11 pm as per standard operating procedures and management should ensure two doses of vaccination for its employees.
The public should follow COVID-appropriate behavior while visiting places of worship, the official said and appealed to the people to cooperate with the police in ensuring an incident-free ceremony.
