No power cuts in Delhi, power demand reduced to 4,160 MW on Thursday: Ministry

The Union Power Ministry on Friday said that there was no power cut in Delhi on Thursday and the maximum power demand fell to 4,160 MW from 4,382 MW on Wednesday. According to the ministry, the maximum power demand in the national capital as on October 14 was 89 million units (MU) (4,160 MW), which was fully met.

“As per the information received from Delhi Discoms, there was no outage due to power shortage, as they were supplied the required quantity of electricity,” a fact sheet on Delhi electricity supply said on Friday. Delhi Discoms have also been allotted 756 MW from Dadri Stage-I and 9.5 MU has been offered on 14 October 2021. However, “zero (zero) power was drawn by the DISCOMs (from additional allocations),” the fact sheet stated.

The data also showed that the peak demand or highest supply in a single day was 4,707MW on Tuesday and 4,382MW on Wednesday. Thus the data shows that the demand for electricity is decreasing with the onset of autumn. The fact sheet shows that there was no shortage of energy in the city from 29 September to 14 October.

Power distribution companies last week warned their customers that thermal power plants that supply electricity to Delhi could face power shortage due to short supply of coal. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in making adequate arrangements for coal and gas to power generation plants in the city.

However, the Union Power Ministry along with Union Minister RK Singh rubbished the claims of low power supply to Delhi and said that the capital would not face any shortfall.

The power ministry had also warned distribution companies of strict action to regulate power supply in Delhi. As per the fact sheet, as on October 14, Delhi had 89 million units (MU) of electricity available against the requirement of 89 million units (MU). As on 13 October, 95.4 MU of power was available against the requirement of 95.4 MU. From 29 September to 14 October, the energy requirement and availability in Delhi was the same.

On Monday, the availability of electricity was excessive. As per the data, discoms in Delhi had drawn less power than what was provided to them. This shows that NTPC (Coal) offered 18.96 MU as against 12.73 MU allotted to Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (DDL). But Tata Power DDL had extracted 12.30 MU.

Similarly, the power provided by Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) and NTPC (Gas) to discoms in Delhi was more than the power drawn by these utilities. The other two discoms supplying electricity to Delhi are BSES Rajdhani Power Limited and BSES Yamuna Power Limited.
