The Center on Friday said that the last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) will not be extended. There is no proposal to extend the date for filing ITR, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj told reporters in Delhi. Today (31st December) is the last date to file ITR.
According to Tarun Bajaj, 5.62 crore ITRs have been filed till Friday. More than 20 lakh returns have been filed today.
“A total of three lakh ITRs have been filed in the last hour. 60 lakh more returns have been filed this year,” he said.
“There is no proposal to extend the deadline for filing income tax returns, the date 31 December 2021 remains the official deadline,” the revenue secretary said.
Meanwhile, taxpayers who have not e-verified their ITRs for the financial year 2019-20 can complete the verification process by February 28, 2022, as the Income Tax Department has asked taxpayers, according to a PTI report. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), in a circular on December 28, said that a large number of electronically filed ITRs for the assessment year 2020-21 are still pending with the Income Tax Department for receipt of valid ITR-V. Form at CPC, Bengaluru or pending e-verification from the taxpayers concerned.
“In respect of all LTRs for the Assessment Year 2020-21 (Financial 2019-20), which were uploaded electronically by the taxpayers within the permitted time … and which remained incomplete due to non-submission of ITR-V Form The Board … is hereby permitted to verify such return either by sending a duly signed physical copy of ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru through Speed Post or through EVC/OTP mode. The verification process should be completed by February 28, 2022,” the CBDT said.
