In a notification issued on May 27, the Uttar Pradesh government said that no woman can be compelled to work in a factory after 7 pm and before 6 am without her written consent. Also, if a woman is working at night, she will have to provide free transport and food by the employer.

As per the notice, factories in Uttar Pradesh will have to ensure:
1. No woman is compelled to work between 7 pm and 6 am without written consent.
2. No woman is fired from her job for refusing to work during such hours.
3. Transport to and from workplace is provided to women working between 7 pm to 6 am.
4. Women working between 7 pm and 6 am are provided with food and adequate care.
5. Toilets, drinking facilities and changing rooms should be provided.
6. Between 7 pm and 6 am, at least four women will have to work in the premises together.
7. Appropriate steps should be taken to prevent sexual harassment.
According to the latest report of the National Family Health Survey, the number of working men in India’s 15-49 age group is three times more than that of women. The states with the lowest percentage of working women include Bihar (14 percent), Uttar Pradesh (17 percent) and Assam (18 percent).
