Notice issued to Amazon, Flipkart for selling substandard quality pressure cooker

Government has sent notice to e-commerce entities like Amazon and Flipkart

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to five leading e-commerce entities Amazon, Flipkart, PaytmMall, Snapdeal and Shopclues for offering pressure cookers that do not meet the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms.

The CCPA has sought response from the e-commerce entities within seven days of the issue of the notice, failing which action can be taken against them under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

The body has also written to the Director General of BIS to take immediate cognizance of the matter and take necessary action.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said that notices were issued to these entities and vendors on November 18.

The CCPA has launched a country-wide campaign to curb the sale of counterfeit and counterfeit goods in violation of quality control orders published by the Centre, a statement issued on Monday said.

Apart from pressure cookers, other essential products that have been identified for the campaign are helmets and LPG cylinders.

The CCPA has also issued instructions to district collectors across the country to investigate unfair trade practices and violation of consumer rights related to the manufacture or sale of such goods.

It is strengthening enforcement measures to create awareness among consumers that they should look for the ISI quality mark while buying consumer products like pressure cookers offline or online.
