Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas led 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/3) to end Italian qualifier Luca Nardi’s run. He will face Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik or Hubert Harkaz.
Fifth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Zhang Zhizhen of China 6-3, 6-2 in his second round match.
Rublev meets Adrian Mannarino in the next round, when the Frenchman knocked out David Goffin, who stunned world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round.
Roberto Bautista Aguta defeated the lucky loser Pavel Kotov 6-1, 7-6 (7/5) and could play Daniil Medvedev In the quarter finals.
In Tel Aviv, Djokovic’s runner-up Marin Cilic beat his opener 5-7, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 against Germany’s Oscar Otte.
Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Heusler, who won his first ATP title in Sofia last week, was knocked out 6-0, 6-2 by Emil Rusuvuori.
