Police said rape cases increased from 106 in 2020 (till November) to 108 this year (by November), fraud cases from 440 to 791, theft cases from 1684 to 1880, theft cases from 319 to 426 and dacoity cases During the period increased from 330 to 547.
The figures indicated a marginal decline in murder cases – from 40 cases during the eleven months in 2020 to 32 during this year’s period and dacoity – from 32 during January-November 2020 to 9 cases during this year’s period In.
When asked about the reason for the increase in crimes despite the lockdown and the weekend shutdown, the police said that registering more number of cases does not mean that crimes have increased. “More than 90% of rape cases result from runaway cases, where the accused and the rape victim knew each other. We are not worried about the high number of cases being registered. Some crimes, which cannot be prevented, will happen. Our focus is on registering cases and solving them,” said a senior police officer.
The data shows that there has been an increase of nearly 21% in the suicide cases in the capital city during January-November as compared to the same period last year. While 229 people had committed suicide in 2020, this year the figure has gone up to 277 (190 male, 87 female).
