Nandyal district administration is devising measures to mitigate the loss of property and human life during natural disasters.
District Collector Rajakumari Gania has asked the officials of various departments to submit reports on the measures to be taken for preparing an advance plan of action in time of natural disasters. Ms. Gania directed the officials to prepare a report with the precautionary measures to be taken for saving lives and properties of people in case of heavy rains, floods and other disasters.
Access to several villages was cut off due to the recent rains, she recalled and noted that the roads connecting 54 villages crossed 21 rivulets and urged the officials to take steps to strengthen them. Ms Rajakumari Gania said due to the encroachment of various water bodies surrounding Nandyal town, there is a possibility of submergence of the town during heavy rains and floods and steps should be taken to curb encroachment of water bodies.
She wanted the irrigation officials to submit a report on the strength of bunds on irrigation canals and streams. The Collector also asked officials to identify the villages that were likely to be affected in case of overflowing of irrigation canals and rivulets due to heavy inflows into them from the forest areas.
The Collector wanted the irrigation officials to take steps to prevent any breaches to Pothireddypadu, Banakacharla and Siddapuram minor irrigation tanks. Agricultural fields in Atmakur division were damaged as no precautionary measures were taken during heavy rains this resulted in landslips on the road leading to Srisailam causing disruption to traffic, she noted.
Ms Rajakumari Gania asked officials to take steps to prevent inundation of residential areas in Nandyal town during heavy rains. She asked the Roads and Buildings department officials to take steps to strengthen the 57 R&B causeways and 30 panchayatraj causeways in the district and also prepare proposals for constructing new bridges.
Ms Rajakumari said there were 27,230 old buildings in the district and the people living in them should be alerted ahead of rains.
