Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru on Tuesday said the old Kaveri bridge, which had developed a huge gap in the expansion joints between Mela Chintamani and Mambazhasalai, would be repaired soon.
He told reporters after inspecting the bridge that it was being used since 1976. Due to poor maintenance during the previous AIADMK regime, it had suffered damages to various joints. Given the importance of its use, it was decided to make repairs.
A Governor’s order was issued for the sanction of ₹6.5 crore. According to highway department sources, the work will start soon.
Shri Nehru said that the process of preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of new bridge adjacent to the existing bridge is over. 130 crore is estimated to be spent on this. It did not require any land acquisition process. He said that steps have been taken to complete the other formalities for the construction of the new bridge over Cauvery at the earliest.
