US sprinter Torey Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist and two-time world champion in track and field, has died at the age of 32, USA Track & Field and his management company said on Wednesday.
Bowie, who also won Olympic 200m bronze and gold in the 4x100m relay at the Rio Games, was found dead at her home, Florida police said. The cause of death could not be ascertained immediately.
The sheriff’s office in Orange County, Florida, said deputies found the woman “provisionally identified as Frantorish ‘Tori’ Bowie” dead in a home while they were conducting a health check.
“On May 2, 2023 at approximately 1 a.m., deputies responded to a home in the 5400 block of Bowman Drive to check on the well being of a 30 year old female who had not been seen or heard from for several days,” Orlando-based the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
“The residence was entered and a woman, tentatively identified as Frantorish “Tori” Bowie, was found dead in the home. There were no signs of foul play.”
Icon Management, her agent, said in an Instagram post, “We are devastated [sic] Very sad to share the news that Tory Bowie has passed away.”
“We have lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister. Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shone so bright! We are truly saddened and our prayers are with his family, friends and everyone who loved him.”
USA Track & Field said on Twitter that it was “deeply saddened” to hear of Bowie’s death, adding that his “impact on the sport is immeasurable.”
Bowie won gold in the 4×100 m relay, as well as 100 m silver and 200 m bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics. The following year, she won the World Championships 100 m in London, as well as relay gold.
The Sandhill, Mississippi native’s last appearance on the world stage was at the 2019 Doha World Championships, where she finished fourth in the long jump.
She was the only American woman since Carmelita Jeter in 2011 to win an Olympic or world 100 m title.
