You can get 88% protection from infection by being hospitalized omicron COVID-19 variant if you have a . has been vaccinated booster dose, reveals a new study.
The recent finding was published in the UK Health Protection Agency (UKSHA) report.
The vaccine’s effectiveness against Omicron drops to 52% about six months after getting a second shot of a COVID-19 vaccine, explained Eric Topol, professor of molecular medicine, and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in the US. However, a booster dose substantially enhances immunity and reduces the chances of hospitalization with COVID-19 infection.
Topol tweeted on Sunday, “This is a huge boost of protection for hospitalization from Omicron infection versus the 3rd dose vaccine. Vaccine effectiveness 52 percent after 3rd dose (due to 2nd dose decrease after 6 months) ) to 88 percent.
“It is very impressive that vaccines directed to the ancestral strain spike from 2 years ago, with the virus that has evolved through more than 290 million confirmed cases, and now in the highly-mutated Omicron, with an efficacy of about 90 percent versus severe disease. Preserved. With the third shot,” he said in another tweet.
How the study was conducted:
The UKHSA report cited two studies that examined the association between two COVID variants (Omicron and Delta) and vaccination status and the risk of hospitalization.
The first study was based on nearly half a million Omicron cases across all age groups, while the second used a smaller dataset and is limited to age 18 and older.
The first study confirms a previous finding of a reduced overall risk of hospitalization for Omicron compared to the delta version.
Both studies found a significant reduction in the risk of hospitalization in Omicron cases after three doses of the vaccine compared to those who were not vaccinated.
Despite the projected reduction in the risk of hospitalization and maintaining the vaccine’s effectiveness against hospitalization, the study’s authors note that there may still be a large number of hospitalizations.
The risk of hospital admissions from emergency departments with Omicron was about one-third that for Delta.
