Omicron cases: The number of Omicron cases in India rose to 32 after seven more were reported in Maharashtra and two more in Gujarat on Friday. Omicron is a highly mutated form of the coronavirus. So far, cases of omicrons have been reported in four states (Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka) and one union territory (Delhi).
With 17, Maharashtra has the highest number of omicron cases followed by Rajasthan (9), Gujarat (3), Karnataka (2) and Delhi (1).
On Friday, Maharashtra reported seven new cases of the Omicron version of Covid, including a one-and-a-half-year-old child – three from Mumbai and four from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.
Three men aged 48, 25 and 37 have returned from Tanzania, the UK and South Africa respectively, while four patients are in contact with Nigerian women who were infected with the new variant on 6 December.
Four out of seven are asymptomatic while three have mild symptoms.
Of these new cases, four have been fully vaccinated, one has been given a single dose against COVID and one has not been vaccinated. The child is not eligible for vaccination.
