Palanpur: People usually celebrate their birthday with sweets, chocolates, cut cakes, lighting lamps, offering prayers or celebrating in grand parties.
But residents of the remote village of Bhandu in Mehsana will remember the way former sarpanch Gopi Patel celebrated his birthday.
On Monday, Patel ensured the future of 149 girls. Patel opened bank accounts of these girls under Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) for which he contributed Rs.250 each as the first installment.
The initial target was to open accounts for 500 girls and on Monday, parents of 149 took advantage of Patel’s initiative. Mehsana post office superintendent RA Goswami confirmed, “Today 149 SSY accounts have been opened for girls.”
SSY is a savings scheme promoted by the Government of India (GOI), which can be opened by the parents of a girl child below the age of ten years. The tenure of this scheme is 21 years or till the girl gets married after the age of 18 years. It is part of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign of the Government of India.
“I have made the first contribution of Rs 250 for 149 girls,” Patel told TOI. Patel said that her endeavor is to educate the parents so that the financial future of their daughters is secured in the early stages of their life.
The former sarpanch called the post office employees to his office on Monday. The population of the village is 12 thousand.
SSY requires that at least one contribution is made in a financial year till the girl child attains maturity.
“I want to create this awareness so that the society shows more interest in raising a girl child in a meaningful way,” he said, adding that parents who are willing to contribute more can also contribute in the first installment. You can do this by adding .
