Government schools in about 20 states and union territories have less than 10 per cent internet connections, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday. This information was shared by the Union Minister of State for Education, Annapurna Devi in reply to a written question in the Lok Sabha. The minister, in his response, cited data from the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), 2019-20.
States and Union Territories with lowest internet connectivity
- Government schools in Meghalaya have an internet connection of about 1.27 per cent, the lowest among all states.
- Tripura ranks second in terms of internet connectivity in its government schools with 1.61 percent internet connections.
- Government schools in Ladakh have about 1.86 percent internet connectivity.
- In the Hindi-speaking region, Bihar has the lowest internet connectivity of 2.05 per cent in government schools.
- Internet is not very accessible even for Manipur government schools as only 2.36 schools have internet connection.
- In Odisha, only 2.72 percent of government schools have internet connectivity.
- In Uttar Pradesh, only 2.94 percent of government schools have internet connection.
Other states which have less (less than 10 percent internet connectivity in their government schools, 2.35 percent in Mizoram, 2.36 percent in Manipur, 3.03 percent in Nagaland, 3.35 percent in Chhattisgarh, 3.81 percent in Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh) 3.44 percent, Assam 4.32 percent, Jammu and Kashmir 5.18 percent, Uttarakhand 6.40 percent, Karnataka 7.75 percent, Telangana 8.03 percent, Goa 8.46 percent, West Bengal 9.65 percent and Andhra Pradesh 9.10 percent.
State with highest internet connection in the country
- Chandigarh has topped the list with 100 percent internet connection in all its government schools.
- It is followed by Lakshadweep, which has 93.33 per cent internet connectivity in government schools.
- Delhi ranks third with 88.18 percent of schools having internet connectivity.
- Kerala has the fourth highest internet connectivity in government schools at 87.16 per cent.
