Over 19 lakh bad accounts were banned by WhatsApp India in May: Here’s why

WhatsApp on Friday said it has banned over 19 lakh bad accounts in India India In compliance with new IT Rules 2021 in the month of May. The platform banned over 16.6 lakh bad accounts in India in April.

The company also received 528 complaint reports in May within the country, and “actionable” accounts were 24. In April, WhatsApp received 844 complaint reports within the country, and “actionable” accounts were 123.

“Over the years, we have continuously invested in artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technology, data scientists and experts and processes to keep our users safe on our platform,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said in a statement.

“This user-safety report includes details of user complaints and related actions taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp’s own preventive actions to combat abuse on our platform,” the spokesperson said.

Information published in accordance with Rule 4(1)(d) of technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021, reports the actions taken by WhatsApp in response to complaints received from users in India through the complaints mechanism and its prevention and detection methods for violation of laws. Contains information on operations in India from of the land or its conditions of service.

Under the new IT Rules 2021, large digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users will have to publish a monthly compliance report.
