Legislators voted for Hamza in the Punjab CM election on April 16 and his support gave him a majority with 197 votes, more than the required 186 in the 371-member house. But Hamza lost his majority as the Election Commission “de-seats” the lawmakers – meaning they are no longer members of the House and their votes will not be counted.
The decision of the Election Commission has dealt a serious blow to the delicate coalition government of PM Shahbaz Sharif, which is facing serious financial and political challenges before the country.
The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling three days ago on a reference to the President seeking an interpretation of a defection law. SC said votes of dissatisfied MPs cannot be counted in case of no-confidence motion.
The Election Commission had reserved its decision on May 17 after the debate was over. The reference against defectors was sent by the speaker Parvez Elahi After the elections to the Punjab Legislative Assembly in which he was a candidate. But he boycotted the election.
PTI members welcomed the decision. Senior PTI functionary Asad Umar said, “Today another chapter of this conspiracy has been exposed.
