Lady Reading Hospital (LHH) spokesman Mohammad Mosik said the hospital had seen 100 bodies. Comic said that 53 injured are still undergoing treatment, while seven have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He said that most of the injured are out of harm’s way.
Most of the casualties in the incident were sensitive. The dead included at least one deputy superintendent of police, five sub-inspectors and the mosque’s imam, Maulana Sahibzada Noorul Amin.
The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TPTP), popularly known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, saying it was part of the killing of TTP commander Umar Khalid Khurasani in Afghanistan last August.
According to the Peshawar Police Control Room, over 200 injured were taken to Lady Reading Hospital.
Peshawar’s Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ejaz Khan told Geo TV that the head of the suspected attacker had been recovered from the blast site. The suspected attacker has been identified as Mohammad Ayaz, 37, son of Salim Khan of Mohmandir Agency.
“It is possible that the attacker was already present at the police line before the blast and may have used an official vehicle (to enter),” Khan said, adding that the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) case is investigating.
Nine people have been included in the revelations on Tuesday.
Khan said, “Usually 300 to 400 police personnel conduct afternoon prayers at the mosque. If the blast took place inside the police line, then it is a security failure and further investigation can be done,” he said.
The attackers entered the heavily guarded Faizabad, inside police lines, with four layers of security. Provincial police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari said they were investigating the blast and how the attacker entered the heavily guarded mosque behind police lines.
They fear that the suicide bombers may have been present in the police line before the blasts as the family remained in government accommodation.
Ansari has admitted that it was a huge security lapse and a detailed inquiry has been ordered into the blast.
He told the media on Tuesday that the search operation was limited to the main gate of the police line.
He said 10-12 explosives were used in the blast and it was brought to the police line as construction material as construction work is going on here.
Near the blast site are the headquarters of the Peshawar Police, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), the Frontier Reserve Police, the Elite Force and the Department of Telecommunications.
The preliminary investigation report of the blast has been sent to Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. A high level inquiry committee has been formed to look into the security offence.
Meanwhile, the funeral prayers of six police personnel, including the Deputy Superintendent of Police killed in the attack on Tuesday, were read in the police line. Earlier on Monday, the funeral prayers of 27 policemen were offered together.
Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have condemned the statement. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan also expressed grief over the attack.
Last year, 63 people had lost their lives in a similar attack on a mosque in the Kocha area of the area. The TTP has gone back on the ceasefire with the Government of Pakistan and has issued orders to carry out its apprehensions of a terrorist attack. He has been accused of involvement in several deadly attacks, including the 2009 attack on Army Headquarters, Ginger, and the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing. This is explained in detail in Al-Qanun.
